Seasonal tours

Few experiences change with the calendar quite like a helicopter tour. The same route flown in April and again in October can feel like two completely different journeys, shaped by light, foliage, and air conditions. That is why we always encourage guests at AR Helicopters to think about the season before they book — it genuinely shapes what you will see out of the cabin window. ## Why Timing Matters More Than You Might Expect Weather and light are the two forces that define every flight. Cool, dry air typically offers sharper visibility and a smoother ride, while warm, humid afternoons can bring haze and the occasional bump of thermal activity. The sun's angle matters too: a low winter sun casts long shadows that make the landscape look sculpted, whereas the high summer sun flattens everything into bright, even color. Daylight length plays a role as well, since it determines how late in the day we can safely schedule departures and whether an evening flight will catch a sunset or end in darkness. ## Spring and Summer: Green Valleys and Long Evenings Once the thaw begins, the landscape comes alive. Rivers and waterfalls run at their fullest, fields turn green, and wildlife becomes far more active along shorelines and forest edges. Summer also brings our longest operating days, which means more flexibility if you prefer an early morning departure or a relaxed evening flight after dinner. ### Making the Most of the Summer Light Midday flights in the warmer months can suffer from haze and glare, so we often suggest booking the first departure of the day, when the air is calm and the light is soft. Morning flights also tend to be smoother, which is worth considering if anyone in your party feels nervous about flying. If an evening slot suits you better, aim for the last hour before sunset, when the low golden light gives photographs a warmth that midday simply cannot match. ## Autumn: A Short but Spectacular Window For many guests, early autumn is the highlight of the touring year. Deciduous forests turn gold, orange, and red, and from a few hundred feet up the color comes through in sweeping patches rather than isolated trees. Crisp fall air also tends to be exceptionally clear, so distant ridgelines and coastlines appear sharper than at any other time of year. The trade-off is demand: the foliage window is brief and shifts with the weather, so flights during peak color fill up quickly. If autumn is your goal, reserve early and stay flexible about the exact date. ## Winter: Crisp Air and Unobstructed Views Winter surprises a lot of first-time guests. With the leaves down and, in many regions, a layer of snow on the ground, the terrain opens up in a way it never does in summer — hillsides, rock formations, and frozen waterways that are hidden in July are all on display. Visibility is often the best of the year. A few practical tips will make a cold-season flight far more comfortable: - Dress in warm layers you can shed in the cabin, since heaters keep the interior pleasant but the boarding area will not be. - Wear darker clothing to cut down on reflections in the glass if you plan to take photos. - Bring sunglasses, because the low winter sun sits close to the horizon for much of the day. - Schedule around midday when possible, so the sun is at its highest and the light is most even. - Allow extra driving time to the airfield in case of icy roads. ## Choosing Your Season and Booking With Confidence There is no single "best" time to fly — only the best time for what you want ## Related reading - [Elevating Perspectives: The Art and Science of Helicopter Aerial Photography](/blog/aerial-photography) - [Chasing Golden Light: A Guide to Capturing Helicopter Perspectives](/blog/best-time-of-day-for-helicopter-photography-sunrise-vs-sunset) - [Sky vs. Sea: Navigating the Best Ways to Explore the Big Island](/blog/big-island-helicopter-tours-vs-boat-tours) - [Pet-Friendly Sky Adventures: Navigating Helicopter Tours with Your Furry and Feathered Friends](/blog/can-you-bring-pets-on-helicopter-tours-a-complete-guide) - [Skyward Perspectives: Navigating Urban Canyons from Above](/blog/city-tours)
